Thank You, Burnie So clear back in October I blogged about success in reaching a new milestone in my weightless using my Healthy Trucker Diet. Now here it is a month later and I'm down to 294...That may not sound like much, but when you lose it without being hungry and eating all the delicious food you want it tends to make it a great accomplishment indeed! One thing I've noticed with my Trucker Diet is that sometimes you set at a weight for a while, and then, almost like magic you will lose a bunch of pounds. In only a few days. The key is cutting yourself some slack and staying on the Trucker Diet. So a friend of mine just went in for his DOT physical. As most of you know the rules have been changed and the people performing the physicals have to be licensed and follow a bunch of medical guidelines put out by a branch of the DOT called the FMCSA. The days of your family doctor doing your physical may be over. So, he went to a provider where he lived to get his physical, expecting it to be an in and out the door visit. Well, it turns out my friend who is in his 50's has hypertension (140/90 is the cutoff) so he's going to have to get that under control. Then the person performing the physical told him that because his BMI-Body Mass Index was over 35 he was going to have to see a sleep doctor and make sure he doesn't have sleep apnea. So my friend was given a three month conditional medical card. So here's my friend Kent doing his work out routine. He does a whole bunch of those deep knee bend things...Made me tired just photographing him. And then at the end of the day he often takes a couple mile walk. The thing that really blew me away was that my friend is really into taking care of his health. He does calisthenics each day after he drives and this usually includes taking a couple mile walk. He says he's even dropped a couple pant sizes because he's become so fitness conscious in the last year. It was a complete shock to him that he was the same weight he had been the year before. His doctor told him that muscle weighs more than fat and that is why he hasn't lost any weight while becoming more lean and mean.
My friend isn't looking forward to getting an exam done for sleep apnea. He's one of those drivers that starts driving around six a.m. and is often done for the day before six at night. He doesn't stop for naps he says because he sleeps good and doesn't get tired during his shift. I'm going to try and keep up with him. I'm interested to know more about the process he's going through and how many "hoops" he's going to have to jump through. I'm also interested to know how much out of pocket he's going to have to pay before all of this is said and done. For those of you drivers worried about your Body Mass Index. (BMI) being too high, (over 35 BMI is the cutoff for sleep apnea testing) Feel free to use the BMI calculator below I borrowed from the CDC. So, where I run in the Pacific Northwest the weather is getting nasty and cold and the days are short. It seems like I'm always running at night. I'm not getting as much sun which my body uses to make the crucial substance Vitamin D3. Lack of D3 can be linked to a ton of chronic medical conditions.
Including: Cancer, Hypertension, Heart Diseas, Autism, Obesity, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Diabetes 1 and 2, Multiple Sclerosis, Crohn's Disease, Signs of Aging, Insomnia, Hearing Loss, Osteoporosis, Macular Degeneration, Migranes, Depression, and even Alzheimer's Disease. And the list goes on. Here's a link to an excellent article on Vitamin D3 by Dr. Mercola. So due to weather I ended up stuck in Caldwell Idaho friday and Saturday. There was only one restaurant around so my dinner both nights was steak and all you can eat shrimp...Nothing wrong with that, except the all you can eat shrimp were breaded and boy did I eat a lot of them. So, It messed up my "low carb diet". The bigger diet mistake I made, was the 2 Mikes Hard Lemonades I bought at the hotel lobby and that I decided to guzzle just before bed around midnight. However I'm back in the saddle When I got home Sunday I cooked a Paleo Pork Loin Dinner with onions, carrots, and sweet potatoes. I used arrowroot flour as a thickener for the Paleo gravy. Remember if you use arrowroot as a thickener it doesn't like too much heat so just bring it to a simmer (not a boil) as you stir. It thickens up clear and real nice and is neutral on flavor. Breakfast was four large chicken sausage links from Costco and Lunch yesterday was at Jubitz Truck Stop Deli. Chicken with Gravy and meatballs and one kilbasa. Dinner was a cup of decaf coffee with whole milk and stevia.
I ordered the cottage cheese and tomato slices plus a fresh fruit bowl instead of Potatoes and bread. Fresh tomato, cottage cheese, and egg sandwich. Low carb and delicious. There's plenty of truck parking behind the Super 8 next door, which also has the best price on rooms in the Spokane Area. It's only one exit headed east from the Broadway Flying J Exit.
I was blown away by the quality of the steak at this Denny's location. Found this video about a guy that was extremely heavy and took control of his life and lost weight. Except by losing the weight he was left with a lot of baggage so to speak. This isn't about loose skin as much as it is about courage and learning to love ones self the way they are. Much respect for this guy. This Song "Tuna Fish" by Emiliana Torrini makes me feel like laughing and puts me in the zone.11/11/2014 A cool girl in Belize put a bunch of songs on my computer a few years ago. Her name was Belle but I just call her the Cosmic DJ because of how cool those songs are. some of those songs from her list have become my favorites and help keep my wheels turning. It's amazing how a great bunch of songs make the miles go by.
Of all the different types of food I eat on the road doing my Healthy Trucker Diet. the mighty omelet reigns supreme. It is both low carb and satisfying and lends itself well to keeping breakfast artsy and interesting. Check this photo I snapped of a Taco Omelet with a side of chili at Jubitz Truck Stop. aka The Portlander Inn. The Ritz Cafe in Ritzville Washington lives up to the name, showing their excellent Omelet with some of the best chicken chili I've ever had. (The manager made this chili herself from scratch) a glass of grapefruit juice to wash it down. If you click on these pictures they will get larger. Not to be outdone Breakfast at Mitzels in Kent yesterday was this amazing Paleo friendly dungeness and shrimp omelet topped with Hollandaise served with cottage cheese and fresh fruit.
This Thursday night dinner...Been craving KFC for a while That's cole slaw (not potatoes), however the chicken skin (original recipe) is as most people know breaded. So, not the greatest choice if you're eliminating carbs. But, oh how delicious!
So I ran into another one of our drivers...Her names Tiffany and when she's not driving she's doing things like Running foot races up skyscrapers (Yes, I said running) and cutting off her hair for charity. If you're a woman thinking about trucking you might want to consider Hauling Cars as a career. Heres a link to an article about Car Hauling as a career. Keep in mind hauling cars doesn't require you to be a super athlete, but car hauling is challenging and gives you a chance to be physically active in a trucking career and THAT is a good thing. Tiffany is also a big proponent of the Paleo Diet and sent me a picture of a Paleo breakfast she made with Paleo Waffles Yum!!!
O.k. 298. The N.D. (Naturopathic Doctor) at Jubitz (First in Health) 503 978-1119 knocked off three pounds for clothing. How cool is that? I've actually been fluctuating up to as high as 301 since my big victory of getting down to 295 a couple weeks ago. That's the nature of the beast. My Trucker Diet isn't a crash diet although there are times when the weight seems to fall off more than others. This particular Cultured Caveman Food truck was located at 1477 NE Alberta Street. Radio Cab cost me fourteen dollars one way. Keep in mind that this area is quaint and cool to just wander around and check out the shops and people watch. So I don't get to eat full on Paleo Food very often so I went a little crazy and bought seven items. It was all delicious. My favorites were the Collard Greens, Chicken Tenders breaded with coconut flour and the Ethiopian Cabbage. If you click on the pictures they'll get bigger.
So tomorrow I'm going to go in and get my DOT physical. Since I have sleep apnea I have to bring in a print out showing thirty days of a minimum of 4.75 hours average daily use of my C-pap. The nice folks at Mill Plain Medical & Pharmacy in Vancouver Wa were able to take my thumb drive that my Fisher Paykel C-pap has and print it out for me. I included a picture of my C-pap printout so you can get an idea what they are looking for.
