We booked a cabin at Rio Encantado for five hundred dollars for eight nights, this place is a jungle reserve next to a river. From the dental office it was a half hour drive by cab and cost twenty two dollars each way. The owner of this place Frank is a Pre Colombian Art dealer from seattle. August is the rainy season in Panama and so the prices are lower then. I cant say enough good things about Rio Encantado it is heaven on earth so peaceful and there were no other guests staying there for most of the time we were there which meant we had the awesome swimming pool to ourselves. One more thing I need to mention is that you are in the middle of the jungle next to a crashing river yet there are no mosquitos. Yep, thats right in a rain forest and no mosquitos. Here is a photo of the giant swimming pool it is built around a huge boulder with a turtle carved into it. and it is so clean that frogs sometimes swim in it. Heres one of the local frogs chillin' out at the pool. Front patio of our cabin, these cabins are completely self contained with a kitchen and plenty of hot water so you can stop and buy groceries in David and then live it up like kings in your own jungle hideaway. Here's a link to the website of rio encantado.

Photo of the penthouse suite Puerta Del Sol Hotel Panama. We got to David Panama around nine o clock at night. When you get off the bus at the terminal in David there will be lots of taxi's there to take you where you want to go. Taxi's are not very expensive in Panama to get to most any place in David was less than five dollars. Our Dentist had been kind enough to book us at the Puerta del sol hotel which we had checked out on Trip advisor and was rated number two out of all the hotels in David. The rooms all have good a.c. and the most expensive room in the place is the suite one hundred dollars which I dont recommend because it doesn't have enough hot water to fill up the hot tub. (although a luke warm hot tub can still be very nice.) Just get a small room there, the smallest being 37 dollars a night. The cool thing about our hotel was that checkout was at 2 p.m. so we could leave our bags there and go to our dental appt. at 11:30 a.m. The next morning we went in for our first Dental Appt. Here is Dra. Luz Magalys Serrano and her dental assistants getting ready to go to work on Terrie. The first day she put on a temporary crown on my bicuspid and filled five cavitys I had. Then she did a cleaning on Terrie and checked out her mouth to see what could be done. Our appt only lasted less than an hour (and there is no charge for office visit only for the work that is done.) we scheduled our next appt in a few days and then it was off to our jungle hide away I had booked for the next 9 days. No this isn't Panamanian food, this is the plate of huevos rancheros I ordered at the Urban Crave restaurant at the Houston Texas airport on our way down to Panama. Boy was it good. Taking the Bus Vs. flying from Panama City to david. From the Airport in Panama City Panama we decided to take the bus to David Panama. It cost around 35 dollars U.S. for a taxi to the bus terminal from the airport, where we cought our bus to David Panama where our Dentist was awaiting us the following day. The bus from Panama City Panama to David cost us 15.25 one way per person and a bus left every hour, they were comfortable with television shows (in spanish) but far more comfortable than the airplane flight down here. Terrie took this photo leaving Panama City on the bus. The bus trip to David Panama from Panama City now takes eight hours instead of the advertised six hours because the govt. has started regulating the bus speed using G.P.S. in order to cut down on accidents. For this reason I would strongly reccomend paying the 110.00 dollars or so and flying to David in around an hour. It is money well spent. Keep in mind you have to take a Taxi from the main international airport to the airport that flies from Panama City to David. It's about an hour taxi drive and cost us thirty five bux. One of the nice things about Panama is that they use the U.S. dollar as their currancy. This makes it far less confusing for visiting gringos. I broke a couple teeth within a few weeks of each other. The one on the side when I bit down on a pebble or bone while eating pizza at a local restaurant. The front one was actually a cap that gave out and had been the result of a rock fight as a six year old. (and I had been so proud of that new tooth too!) I currently don't have any medical or dental insurance so I decided this was my chance to make lemonaid out of lemons and take a Dental Vacation. "Hey Tweet, what do you say we take a trip to Panama?" "Panama?" "Well sure, we always go to mexico (and we love mexico) but lets go check out a place we haven't been. So, for 750 dollars we found a couple round trip tickets to Panama on Orbitz. I'll post more soon on our Panama dental vacation so stay tunned. |
